What is Iris Identification System?

Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification, taking unique patterns within a ring-shaped region surrounding the pupil of each eye. It is an extremely reliable and accurate identification method with very low false match rates.

NADRA IRIS Identification System News Update

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has announced the deployment of the Iris Recognition System (IRS) to enhance the country’s biometric verification system. The move comes as part of NADRA’s efforts to strengthen identity verification and citizen deduplication processes.

Following the successful pilot at NADRA Headquarters, the Iris recognition system has been rolled out at key NADRA Mega Centres in Blue Area Islamabad, PECO Road Lahore, and DHA Karachi. The phased implementation will continue across all 700 National Registration Centres (NRCs) nationwide.

The IRS operates by registering unique patterns within the ring-shaped region surrounding the pupil of each eye. This automated biometric identification method has proven to be highly reliable and accurate, with minimal false match rates. NADRA Chairman Tariq Malik emphasized that since no two irises are identical, the IRS provides an additional layer of protection against identity duplication and theft.

The deployment of the Iris Recognition System marks a significant milestone in securing citizens’ identities, according to Chairman Malik. He noted that this technology ensures the integrity and security of various sectors, including government services, financial institutions, and industries dealing with sensitive information.

NADRA believes that the introduction of the Iris technology will not only strengthen its unique identity issuance system but will also enable biometric identification of children. As iris scanning utilizes special infrared cameras to read and digitize iris patterns, it becomes nearly impossible to fake or imitate iris identity. The complex patterns are converted into templates for matching using mathematical algorithms. When combined with facial and fingerprint matching, the integration of these biometric modalities will provide immutable identity provision and significantly improve the accuracy of verification by NADRA.

With the adoption of the Iris Recognition System, Pakistan takes a major step forward in streamlining and fortifying secure identification processes. This development ensures that citizens’ identities remain protected, as the “window to their souls becomes the fortress of their digital existence,” Chairman Malik concluded.
